ON THE BENEFIT OF WELCOMING PRAYER

Anything that upsets our normalcy is a threat to the ego but in the Big Picture, it really isn’t.....Falling apart is for the sake of renewal, not punishment. *** Our best response is to end our fight with reality-as-it-is. We will benefit from anything that approaches a welcoming prayer. -- Fr Richard Rohr, "Daily Meditation," April 26, 2021

It seems the hardest lesson to learn unto living is what Rohr has long preached: We don't get to heaven by doing it right, we get to heaven by doing it wrong.

Which might lead unaware thinkers to the conclusion that doing it wrong is doing it right. The butt-kicker is that doing it wrong as a self-determined objective is not doing it right, will get us naught but grief for which we definitely will be called to account.

We learned early on of the necessity of holding our mind open, willing to change our mind. Now we are at this, the next step up to a deeper learning...an exchanged mind which is of God. We can neither think nor unthink our way to an exchanged mind.

I suspect we will ever live in the material world, but upgraded by discipline and the maintenance of our own spiritual condition. But by grace and by God on occasion experiencing a higher plane...in preparation for yet more spiritual growth.

So we do get to heaven by doing it wrong to the mind's eye which leads us to atone, amend, admit and detach...to God. Or, righted in a word.

God calls us to a new way of living, a new way of relating to God, to others, and to the world....a way of cooperating rather than competing, a way of giving rather than getting, a way of sharing rather than hoarding, a way of sacrifice rather than comfort, a way of faith rather than knowledge, a way of relationship rather than anonymity, a way of love rather than animosity. -- Fr Richard Rohr, "Daily Meditation," July 8, 2021
