ON SETTLING FOR BEING UNSETTLED

People wish to be settled; only as far as they are unsettled is there any hope for them. -- Ralph Waldo Emerson

That quote of Emerson's reminds me of another favorite of mine, We must go beyond reason to love

Our reasoning mind is not always wrong, often it can and does head us in the right direction, but inner chaos erupts when the ego, which always legislates for itself, gets our ear. Truly, we must go beyond the reasoning mind, where the ego keeps a pied a terre, to find the higher Power.

Clearly, to find a Power greater than ourself we must go beyond reason...beyond the ego...to love.

Following our spiritual consciousness, we begin to recognize the rightness of the opposite of our sense-life. That's our starting point, and it takes as long as it takes to find our comfort there.

Oh, wait...it may not be finding our comfort there that is the hook, finding our comfort may be the proof of Emerson's quote: We want to be settled in that, but it is only in being unsettled that keeps us seeking...our only hope.

It occurs to me that period between sense-life comfort and divine-love comfort is life in this world...we can believe in God till our face falls off, we're still going to have muddy paths, rocky roads and periods of I say it's spinach, and I say fuhgeddaboudit

Maybe that's God's guarantee that we'll keep coming back...unsettled is doing it right.

Thank you.
